The Chahta Horse Series is of the Rickman foundation herd and includes Choctaw purebred. These purebred are well documented as descendants of those brought across the Trail of Tears.

The Choctaw horse is among the Colonial Spanish Mustangs named the Heritage Horse of Oklahoma and is listed as critically endangered. At the time these photos were taken there were less than 300 Choctaw purebred. These Choctaw purebred are located around Antlers, Oklahoma. They are privately owned and preserved with the support of a volunteer group. www.TheSpiritOfBlackJackMountain.com

“I had the privilege of going up in the mountains to capture a rare glimpse of their beauty. By releasing this print series I hope to bring awareness to these remnants of living treasures invaluable to our Choctaw history and culture.” – Lynda Kay Sawyer

Dr. Phillip Sponenberg, Professor of Pathology and Genetics at Virginia Tech University documented the Choctaw horses’ lineage.
