CROSSING OVER
The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek began the removal of our Choctaw people over what became known as the Trail of Tears. Cold, weary, yet determined step in front of the other, our ancestors marched from their homeland of Mississippi to their new land held in fee simple title in Indian Territory. As they stepped onto the west bank of the Mountain Fork River, hope of a future for Chahta generations to come sprang alive as they envisioned making Indian Territory their new home.
The Mountain Fork River runs along the southeastern border of Oklahoma and was forded by our ancestors on the Trail of Tears as they entered Indian Territory.
